How Much Brushing Is Too Much? The Truth About Overbrushing

We’ve all heard it—brush your teeth twice a day to keep cavities away. But what happens if you brush too much? While keeping your teeth clean is essential, any good dentist would agree that brushing too often, or too aggressively, can actually damage your teeth and gums instead of protecting them. While having white and pearly teeth matters, hard and pressured brushing will not make your teeth whiter; instead, it will harm them.

Here's how you know if you are over-brushing your teeth:


1. If your are brushing more than twice in a day, you are already probably overdoing it

Some brush in the morning and again at night before bedtime for 2 minutes maximum. This bi-daily tooth brushing is the generally accepted dental standard. Certainly, there are some who would claim to brush after every meal, actually thinking that is even better; however, over-brushing is really bad for dental enamel and would irritate the gums. If you are brushing more than twice a day, you may want to reconsider it.


2. Scrubbing Hard Can Inflict Serious Damage to the Teeth and Gums.

Harder scrubbing does not necessarily mean more or less effective brushing. Any qualified dental health practitioner would agree that the disadvantages of hard scrubbing are many.

Enamel Loss – Enamel is forever gone once lost through the merciless effects of scrubbing; sensitivity and a thicket of cavities would follow shortly.

Gum Recession - Over-brushing aggravates gum recession, exposing the roots of your teeth and setting your teeth to several kinds of hell raised against them - pain, decay, and God forbid, even tooth loss.



3. The Correct Way to Brush Your Teeth

Soft-bristled toothbrushes - choose brushes with soft bristles that are gentle on their enamel and gums.

Try using no pressure as you brush - it's the brushes that do the work, not your hands so much. Be careful not to press too hard.

After consuming anything acidic, wait 30 minutes to clean your teeth. Brushing immediately would just serve to remove the acid around the mouth and erode more enamel.


4. Over Brushing Might Make Your Teeth Vulnerable to Other Forms of Deterioration

The irony is that excessive brushing makes the teeth weaker instead of stronger. With thinning enamel and receding gums, one is pushing his teeth towards increased cavities and sensitivity, which in turn increases their fragility in the long run.


5. Bottom line: Brush Smart, Not Hard

Brushing teeth is a must, but the more, the worse. Make two times a day for a gentle wash with reasonable pressure of a soft-bristled toothbrush; your teeth will surely appreciate it.
